Programme
Support Structure development
The following 8 approximately 2 hours session will take the form of facilitated practical work as a simulation of how the process can be implemented in the participants own organisations. If entire top teams are participating they can develop their own organisations programme during the event.
During the event the breakout groups will critically review an entire Business Management structure of their own choice, against the criteria of ‘Hoshin Kanri’. It is through this concept that companies such as Toyota have been able to achieve sustained quality leadership decade after decade.
- Introductions, what is Hoshin Kanri based strategy and policy development? – What is it? (a brief history of its origins and who is using it? What can it do for the participants organisation?) – the Hoshin Model, Group work - how it can fit into the existing organisation structure.
- The current business situation. Feedback from the initial familiarisation process and its implications.
- Where participants want their organisations to be in the future, road blocks and drivers to progress and how to get from here to there and the role of the whole supply chain.
- An explanation of the power of all of the major quality related initiatives, the Cost of Poor Quality, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacture, Six Sigma in Design, Voice of the Customer SIPOC etc. and how they connect into Hoshin Kanri. (Hoshin Kanri provides the ‘what is’ and these other initiatives provide the ‘how to’.)
- Establishing Hoshin Kanri at the top level – working from whatever existing VISION and Mission materials that might be available and by using the Hoshin Kanri model, specific Mission Statements will be created for Customers, Suppliers, Processes, Innovation, (Process as well as Product), Finance, Employees, Organisation and Design at Corporate level.
- For each of the eight features above, performance measures will be identified – there is a lot of work in this and they will be refined by the team during and between the two workshops.
- Agree the immediate next steps and an outline for the role out programme for the rest of the organisation and for the supply chain.
- Agree on the support infrastructure, programme visibility and responsibilities.
The participative nature of the work is such that it is not advisable to give specific times for each 2 hour element (some more some less). If some of the work is not completed, it can be finished without the presence of the tutor. This is usually the case and is not a problem provided that the participants have the motivation to do it.
The workshop is designed to enable the participants to repeat this back in their own organisations and also to take it forward to full implementation. Extracts will be used from David Hutchins very successful book Hoshin Kanri, The strategic Approach to continuous Improvement.
